Assertiveness and Leadership in business word

In today’s business world, the ability to communicate effectively and assertively is a critical necessity for any leader. Recently, I taught the Postgraduate Program in Leadership and People Development at the @UdG University of Girona and want to share some key learnings.

This course is designed for:

– Professionals who lead teams
– Individuals looking to develop communication and leadership skills

Assertiveness was a key topic. In the business environment, assertiveness is essential because:

-If you don’t communicate, your ideas go unnoticed
-If you communicate poorly, you can create conflicts

We focused on identifying barriers to assertive communication, developing strategies to express thoughts clearly and respectfully, and practicing intensively in real-life situations. Practice was the heart of the learning experience, with exercises, simulations, and role-playing that helped participants handle conflicts and communicate confidently.

This experience reaffirmed my conviction that assertiveness transforms team dynamics and company success.

Overcoming Interpersonal Challenges in Engineering

In engineering, technical skills are crucial, but interpersonal competencies are also key to success. Recently, I worked with a talented engineer facing difficulties in communicating and being assertive with their team. Despite exceptional technical skills, they struggled to express their opinions and needs, leading to stress and reduced productivity.

Coaching can be essential for improving these skills. In our sessions, we addressed:

– Identifying personal barriers
– Developing assertiveness and respectful communication
– Managing stress and workplace pressure

Coaching helped the engineer express their emotions, enhance collaboration, and manage stress, resulting in a more balanced and effective performance. If you face similar challenges, coaching can be a valuable tool for your professional development.

Thoughts after the session at the “Postgraduate in Leadership and People Development”

I finished my participation as a trainer in the “Postgraduate in Leadership and People Development” at the Universitat de Girona (UdG). It was an enriching experience that I want to share.

The group was made up of professionals from various companies, all facing challenges in team management. The key lesson that emerged is that ASSERTIVENESS (the topic on which the session focused) is the real “survival kit” in today’s business world.

Why it is crucial:

Many leaders don’t dare to communicate their ideas and needs. Others do, but ineffectively.

During the session, we practiced assertive communication techniques intensively, and it was fascinating to observe the evolution of the participants. My conclusion is clear: an assertive leader is an effective leader. Clear and respectful communication is the foundation of successful teams and productive work environments.
