Collaborating to Transform: Learnings from the Latino Health Collective in Philadelphia

On December 5th, during my stay in Philadelphia, I gave a workshop as part of the Crisol project, focused on the Latino Health Collective. Here I share with you some of the key learnings and the significant impact it had on the attendees.

Key learnings:

• Collaboration vs. Competition: One of the most important lessons was the difference between collaboration and competition. In the context of organizations working towards a common goal, collaboration is essential to achieve results that cannot be achieved independently. In contrast, competition can lead to redundancies and inefficiencies, especially in community work.
• Abundance vs. Scarcity Mentality: The abundance mentality, based on faith and trust, encourages collaboration and the sharing of resources, knowledge and skills. This contrasts with the scarcity mentality, which is based on fear and competition, which can limit communication, collaboration and teamwork.
• Different speeds of collaboration: Organizations have different paces to collaborate due to factors such as availability of resources, organizational structure and culture, previous experience in collaborations, and urgency of community needs. Understanding these differences is crucial to effective collaboration.

Impact on attendees:

• Authentic connections: The workshop helped participants make authentic connections with other organizations, which will facilitate future resource and knowledge sharing.
• Collective impact: By aligning goals and working together, organizations can amplify their impact and create more resilient communities. The workshop inspired attendees to adopt a strategy of collaboration rather than competition to achieve greater collective success.
• Shared Vision: A unified vision was developed to address the needs of Latino communities, respecting each organization’s individual vision, but working toward a common goal.

This workshop was a call to action for organizations serving Latino communities, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and a mindset of abundance to achieve meaningful and sustainable impact. I am immensely grateful for the opportunity to share these learnings and hope they continue to inspire everyone to work together towards a better future.
